The Ghana Police Service has announced a GHC2,000 reward for genuine information leading to the arrest of suspects who subjected a child to harsh beatings in an unnamed town.
“The Police have sighted a horrifying video on social media in which a male adult is seen subjecting an infant to severe beating under a tree.”
In a Facebook post, the police said efforts are underway to track down the individual involved, have him arrested, and rescue the child.
“In view of the urgency associated with the matter, a reward of GH₵2,000.00 has been set aside for anyone who can provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the individual and rescue of the child,” the statement said.
The police said anyone with such information should contact them on 0243809991.
In addition to the GHC2,000 reward provided by the police, a non-profit organisation called Child Rights International has offered a GHC10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
“In support of the Ghana Police Service’s effort to locate the individual, Child Rights International, through the office of the executive director, is publicly staking a reward claim of GHC10,000 to any individual who will be able to provide details that will lead to the location of the individual in question, the person that recorded the video and the individual seated watching the scene unfold,” the CRI said in a statement.
According to the non-profit organisation the reward will be provided after such claims have been substantiated and verified by the Police and/or Social Welfare Department as true.
“Acts of such nature unfortunately are not absent in our society. Numerous children across the country face such abuse daily.
“This video is a clear indication of a dent in child protection efforts in the country and must be tackled with all seriousness and perpetrators of such acts must face the FULL RIGOR OF THE LAW,” the statement said
