The National Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay, known as Freddie Blay has said that the GHC25 million released by the Ministry of Finance to build the National Cathedral is not outrageous.
“Yes things are tough, is it a good time to have free education? Is it a good time to have two meals a day? A debtor is entitled to eat, we have an economy to run, we have a budget to run so if we put up GHC25 million towards the National Cathedral it is not outrageous,” he added.
“Of course there is a mosque other countries like Turkey has built for us and so we are not cap in hand that everything should be built for us. If we say we want to put up a cathedral where many Christians will gather, then so be it. I believe at the end it will turn out to be a place people will go, pay money for activities and as a result generate revenue to us,” he explained.
In an interview on the Xpressive show, he made reference to some national projects which were criticised when it was established. He mentioned that there will always be criticism towards positive projects.
“When building the Jubilee House some said it was unnecessary, the Tema Motorway that is yearning goodwill today some said it was not worth it. The same way free SHS was criticised as a bad project,” he added on.
According to him, governance is about taking steps and making decisions that may not be acceptable by the public yet may be the best project. He therefore urged government to be proactive, take bold steps, ignore criticism and move on.
He mentioned that the country is in difficult times but that does not equate to poverty. He believes that the economic difficulties currently facing the country will not last forever and sooner than later it will be a thing of the past.
