Ghana’s foremost railways skills training institution, the Railway Training School has begun processes to admit students into the school for the first time since it was rehabilitated by the Akuffo Addo led NPP government.
The University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, which is running the school at Essikadu as one of its campuses, has opened admission processes to admit students into the school.
This brings to reality the dream of this government to revive the school which was in total ruins when they assumed the reigns of power. Since 2017, works has been on going at the school to get it to a state that it can start admitting and training people for Ghana’s rail sector.
The Minister for Railway Development, who is also the Member of Parliament for Essikadu, where the school is located, Joe Ghartey says reviving the school has become necessary to train human resource for the industry which is now booming with opportunities.
“With the focus of railway development by Government, there is a dire need for human resource in the sector,” the Minister added.
According to the Minister, though some people may argue that this is not necessary, with the level of investment expected in the railway sector within the next few years, it is of utmost importance that Ghana develops the human resource base to build and manage the sector.
“Today, the sector is already creating hundreds of jobs in the private sector as well as the public sector. Investment in the sector which is estimated to exceed 20 billion dollars by 2035 surely demands a human resource base to manage the sector. In South Africa, UK and China, to name a few examples. Railways Tertiary Institutions have been established,” Hon Joe Ghartey revealed.
Hon Joe Ghartey said more degree level, masters level and diploma and certificate courses will be developed in due course, to even serve the sub-region.
“The School is targeting the West African sub region as its market. The courses that will be taught will have an emphasis on the railways sector,” added.
The University of Mines and Technology says anyone who is interested in Railway training can now purchase a form and apply for admission.
