The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has blamed the delay in the restoration of Accra’s La General Hospital on the facility’s sponsors withholding funding.
In response to a statement made by Rita Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated that the sponsors withdrew the monies after Ghana entered into an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“Mr. Speaker, what has happened is that after the engagement with the IMF, funding from those sources that Parliament approved of, the funding has been withheld by the sponsors,” he added.
“Mr. Speaker, it will be difficult to release funding until the IMF gives the country a clean bill of health.” This is why the government now wants to place it within the context of Agenda 111, which will necessitate some downsizing of the facility.”
After the hospital’s administration revealed major structural difficulties, the La General Hospital was razed in July 2020.
President Akufo-Addo turned the sod on the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project on August 10, 2020, but construction has yet to begin.
