The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has said the government must take full responsibility for incompetently managing the country’s economy.
“President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia should take full responsibility for incompetently managing the economy to a suffocating debt level which has necessitated the retreat for us to request an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the restructuring of our debts,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, the Minority Leader urges the government to focus on expenditure reduction, especially on social intervention to reduce its opulence expenditure.
According to Hon Iddrisu, the government rejected all constructive suggestions from the Minority Caucus in parliament. “What is of greater concern to the NDC minority is that they arrogantly rejected every reasonable and constructive suggestion from us and from other respected economies and Ghanaians on working together to improve the economy,” he said.
He added that: “In any civilised democracy where people take responsibility and have a premium and value on credibility, Dr. Bawumia, I do not know whether he has any respect for the word credibility and its value and what to do with it, including the Minister for Finance, they would have done what is needful.”
Meanwhile, officials of the IMF will commence negotiations with the government today, July 6 to July 13, 2022, on a possible programme to support Ghana’s domestic economic policies.
