Hon Kwasi Oppong-Fosu, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under the erstwhile John Mahama government, has also waded into the brouhaha surrounding the confirmation of the Tarkwa Nusaem MCE, Ben Kesse, by describing what happened as the stock-in-trade of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). He described the process as unacceptable way of exercising the power to govern.
Writing on what happened in Tarkwa where some assembly members were alleged to have been prevented from partaking in the confirmation or otherwise of the new Municipal Chief Executive for the municipality, Hon. Oppong-Fosu implored Ghanaians not to be surprised by that action.
“The gangster-style confirmation of the Tarkwa/Nsuem MCE by the Western Region Security Council led by the Regional Minister in which some twenty-two ELECTED ASSEMBLY MEMBERS perceived to be NDC members were prevented from entering the Assembly Hall to exercise their constitutional rights by heavily armed men shoNuldn’t surprise anyone. This is typical of a clannish approach to exercising power!!!” he wrote.
According to him, this style of governance is an inherent trait in which leadership actions are driven by basic instincts towards conquest and plunder to protect a clan.
“Inherent in the clan’s leadership practice is a trait known as the Caveman’s Syndrome where leadership actions are driven by basic instincts towards conquest and plunder with the singular purpose of clan protection and well-being and concepts such as social justice, equality, human rights, and democracy being the antithesis.
Mr. Oppong-Fosu, a local governance expert, made a damning revelation about the NPP government describing it as one that has brought corruption into governance institutions, and dishonouring human rights of people. He asked, “since they assumed the leadership role of our dear country, which single governance institution have they not corrupted and compromised; which single pillar of democratic principles haven’t they undermined; and which single human rights value have they honoured?”
Hon. Oppong-Fosu advised Ghanaians to be ready for the possible rescue mission that will restore rule of law leading to peace, stability, and development.
