The deputy ranking member of the communications committee in Parliament, and Member of Parliament for Ningo- Prampram, Hon. Sam Nartey George has stated that the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation should allow the use of other identification document for the registration sim cards.
In an interview with OilCity Radio in Kwesimintsim-Takoradi, Hon. George said in accordance with the Subscriber Identity Module Regulation, 2011 (LI 2006), a citizen requires the use of a valid driver’s license, a valid national health insurance card, valid passport, a valid voter identification card or any valid form of identification document to enable the use of a registered mobile number for a service.
According to him, the use of these identification documents for the registration will enable all citizens register their sim cards within three months.
“If we had used other identification cards in the beginning of the registration exercise, all citizens would have registered their sim within three months,” Sam George noted.
He further mentioned that several factors have militated against many in their quest to register their SIM cards.
Following complaints and agitations from the public, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, yesterday, July 31 2022, announced the extension of the SIM card re-registration exercise to September 30, 2022.
