The theatre bulbs at Wa West District Hospital have been out of function for over two years.
Doctors are thus forced to employ cell phone flashlights to assist them in performing surgery on patients.

The condition, according to the Medical Director of the Wa West District Hospital, is hampering operations at the Wechiau Theatre.
“It is really affecting service because the lamp is the second eye for both the nurses and doctors when we are doing an operation,” Dr. Benjamin Ameyuori explained.
The doctor described an event in which his team had to improvise yet again during surgery on a patient who had Gastric Perforation, a full-thickness lesion to the stomach’s wall.

“And we needed to close the hole to avoid the contents from the stomach from leaking out into the entire cavity. And I had to use two [mobile phone] lights one on one side and another one, to be able to see clearly and continue with the procedure,” he told Accra- based Joy TV.

The healthcare officials say to have proved their dedication to saving lives; but, without assistance, very little can be accomplished.
“We are appealing to external bodies who can come to our aid. This is a deprived community and we have sacrificed to be here to offer the best that we can for the people,” he added.
