The Programs Manager for Center for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD) and Project Leader of Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Mr. Paul Nana Kwame Aborampah has said that CODEO and CDD support the use of the Ghana card if it will cause a peaceful election process.
This follows the Electoral Commission’s decision to use the Ghana card as the only required identification document for the registration of the election 2024.
Speaking in an interview with OilCity Radio in Takoradi-Kwesimintsim, Mr. Aborampah stated that due to discrepancies that occurred during the 2012 and 2020 elections, as a result of lack of trust in the EC, its equipment, and process, the EC is ready to employ series of procedures to ensure transparency, fairness, and credibility at the polls.
“And that is why some time ago we used boxes made of woods at the polls, and then we went ahead to use transparent boxes and we have now settled on biometric devices to verify all electorates to ensure transparency,” he said.
According to him, after all the development in the electoral process, there are some persistent discrepancies, especially with the compilation of the voter register.
“The electoral commission has strived so hard to eradicate these problems…and that is why it has finally settled on the use of the Ghana card as a sure way to simplify identification… your Ghana card will help detect if you are truly a Ghanaian.,” Mr. Aborampah.
He further explained that the country is currently moving to the digital space, therefore, in some years to come the Ghana card will be the only document to be used for all citizen-related activities.
