President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the government will do everything necessary to support flood victims in the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions caused by the expulsion of excess water from the Kpong and Akosombo Dams.
Akufo-Addo made the pledge while visiting residents of Mepe and adjacent districts on Monday to assess the extent of the spillage’s impact.
President Akufo-Addo stated that the inter-ministerial committee he appointed to address flooding issues will decide on immediate relief for victims as well as how to prevent a calamity of this magnitude from occurring in the future.
“The coordination is about the immediate and most important thing was to ensure people’s lives, and that is why 9 centres were established for all the displaced people, and all the people in these 9 centres have been provided relief items by NADMO, and it is NADMO’s intention to continue providing relief items. Aside from what NADMO is doing, we must also consider the future.
“I am aware that you are a farming people, and that people who farm on the banks of rivers have had their crops destroyed; one of the things that the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the President are going to do is to work together with the district assemblies to decide the exact support we have to give to you when the water has gone away.”
“And this is why I am saying that the Committee is working in several phases, one being to provide immediate relief, and then to prevent such happening in the future and I want you to know the government is going to do everything in its powers to assist to ensure everything is all right.”
“Let everyone know that when things like this happen and the government acts, politics has nothing to do with it. When I took the oath, I did it on behalf of all Ghanaians. And whether or not they voted for me, I am the president of the people.”
Due to a persistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir, the VRA began controlled water leakage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023.
Thousands of people in South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and other areas have had their homes submerged as a result of the spillage.
