Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, the Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, has declared galamsey illegal in the area with immediate effect.
The traditional ruler’s move was in support of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s fight against the threat.
During a meeting with divisional Chiefs at Okogyeabour Palace in Sefwi Wiawso to garner their support for his move, he issued the order through the head of Paboase, Nana Frimpong Manso.
All divisional chiefs have two weeks to ensure that all earth-moving machines and heavy equipment engaged in galamsey activities are removed from all illicit mining sites, according to the mandate.
It will be followed by regular visits to the locations, as well as the use of informants to trace out and arrest illicit miners.
“Illegal mining has caused considerable environmental harm, particularly to water bodies, forest reserves, and farms, as well as undermined food security with crippling socioeconomic effects,” he stated.
According to Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, the fight against illegal mining is the responsibility of all Ghanaians, not only politicians.
“Any chief under the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council who defies my commands will be sanctioned,” he warned.
He warned settlers who have sold or plan to sell their farmlands to galamsey operators to cease immediately or face having their holdings seized.
The Paramount Chief, who also serves on the Forestry Commission’s Board of Directors, has also asked the government and security services to help battle illegal mining in the area.
