The Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Jean Mensa, believes the 2024 election will be more than just a democratic exercise.
The election next year, according to Mensa, will be a litmus test for the country’s resiliency.
Speaking at the 27th GJA Awards themed; “Leveraging Media Freedom to Sustain the Democratic and Security Architecture: The Litmus Test of Election 2024”, Ms. Mensa said the stakes for the 2024 Election were high because they might make or break the peace and security.
She asked the media to be aware of the delicate interplay required to protect Ghana’s democracy, peace, and harmony.
“The 2024 Election will be more than a democratic exercise; it is the test of our nation’s resilience.”
“As journalists, you will play a critical role in fostering resilience.” “You are the citizens’ ears, eyes, and hearts,” she remarked.
Mensa stated that the job of journalists can have a positive or detrimental impact on the nation and urged that the truth be upheld at all times.
“Ensure that your work goes beyond mere rhetoric to responsible journalism,” she said while acknowledging the media’s pioneering role in building and shepherding the nation’s democracy throughout the years.
The EC chairperson condemned some media sources for being used as vehicles for propaganda, spreading falsehoods and misinformation, and therefore polarising citizens along political party lines.
She stated that the media must accept their obligation to promote transparency, truth, and accuracy.
“Your work as journalists will have an impact on our dear nation, either positively or negatively.” You are the bedrock, the light of truth, of our democracy as the Fourth Estate.”
“You are the defenders of transparency.” “You’re a forerunner for liberty, a catalyst for informing and shaping public debate,” Mensa added.
She stated that the National Media Commission must maintain rigorous adherence to media ethics and set the standards to promote truth and respect, as well as punish those who violate the rules and regulations.
Citizens must be discriminating and insist on the truth from the media at all times.
“The power of the pen is unmatched and, therefore, must always engage in fact-checking of every information received thoroughly to avoid misinforming the public.”
In total, 34 awards were given to journalists and media companies for outstanding reporting and effort, with Erasmus Asare Donkor, a Multimedia Group broadcast journalist, being named Journalist of the Year.
