The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has polled its flagbearer candidates ahead of the delegates meeting on November 4.
Kennedy Agyapong took the first slot in the balloting held in Accra on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, followed by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the second slot.
Former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto took the third spot, while former Mampong MP Francis Addai Nimo took the fourth.
The party’s national election committee handled the voting. On November 4, the NPP will convene its national delegates conference to determine its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
Ken Agyapong, Dr Bawumia, and Dr Akoto are the primary competitors in the party’s current four-horse contest. Alan Kyeremateng withdrew from the contest following the Special Delegates Conference.
Ken Agyapong, a prominent NPP MP for Assin Central, has been a vociferous critic of the government and has promised to bring about change if elected flagbearer.
Dr. Bawumia is the current vice president and is widely regarded as the race’s frontrunner. He is seen as a safe pair of hands among the party’s intellectuals.
Dr. Akoto is a former agriculture minister and is regarded as a technocrat.
Ghana’s ruling party, the NPP, has been in power since 2017. In the 2024 general elections, the party hopes to win a third term.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is mounting a serious challenge to the NPP. Former President John Mahama leads the NDC, which hopes to retake power in 2024.
The general elections in 2024 are projected to be a close battle. The two primary competitors are the NPP and the NDC.
