George Alex Mensah, Commissioner of Police (COP), has formally retired from the Ghana Police Service after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.
COP Mensah has been a member of the police force for almost 30 years, holding numerous roles such as Director General of Operations.
Following the release of a voice tape in which he is purportedly heard criticising the work of the incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, and the necessity to remove him from office for mismanaging the Police Service, he has become a household figure in Ghana in recent weeks.
A legislative ad hoc committee has begun a probe into the leaked audio tape. COP Mensah and other police officers have previously testified in front of the committee.
COP Mensah is entitled to a range of retirement benefits, including gratuities and pensions, under the Police Service Regulation, 2012, Constitution Instrument (CI 76).
He is also entitled to the perks of the service as approved by the Police Council.
