Allister John, the main suspect in the death of the 35-year-old businesswoman in Sokoban, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in another case for stealing a phone and GHC 167,666.
He was convicted on two counts of stealing at the Asokwa Circuit Court after being charged with stealing a mobile phone worth 4,000 Ghana cedis and a cash amount of GHC 167,666 from the complainant, Gloria Morrison, a businesswoman and resident of Bantama in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of the Ashanti region.
According to the police, Allister John worked as a receptionist with the complaint at a Bantama hotel in 2022, but quit and later returned to the facility in July 2023.
The complainant asked Allister John to assist her in adjusting her phone’s settings after being hired again at the hotel, but he took off with it. Later, he gained access to the phone and used the mobile app to withdraw GHC 167,666 from the complainant’s bank account.
The fact that the defendant had no prior convictions at the time of sentence was taken into account, the judge stated at the sentencing hearing at the Asokwa Circuit Judge on Friday, October 6.
The judge, Her Honour Vida Yeboah, also stated that she considered the convict’s age and the fact that he acknowledged to the crime accused, therefore not wasting the court’s time.
Allister John was therefore sentenced to 20 years in prison for the first count of theft, which was a phone valued GHC 4,000, and 20 years in prison for the second count of stealing, which was GHC 167,666 that he took from the complainant’s bank account via the mobile app.
He will serve both sentences at the same time.
Allister John, the convict, burst into tears, fell down, and begged the court to decrease his sentence, but the court observed that the judgment had already been issued and that nothing could be done.
He was then led out of court by police and sent to prison.
