Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the governing NPP’s flagbearer candidate, has completed his nationwide campaign with a rally in Bolgatanga, the Upper East regional headquarters.
The rally, attended by thousands of Upper East Region delegates, the Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, North East, and Upper East regional chairmen, recognised bodies in the party, and volunteer groups, was the culmination of months of Dr. Bawumia visiting all 16 regions to directly engage delegates for the 4 November election and lay out his vision for the party and future government.
Accompanied by his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, Dr. Bawumia recounted his contributions to the expansion of the NPP over the years, the sacrifices he has made, and his ideas to solve party members’ issues.
“Deepening party-government relations is one of my top priorities.” A critical step would be to direct a considerable number of the President’s existing appointments to Constituencies and Regions. As a result, each constituency would receive a minimum of ten appointees, while each region would receive twenty,” he explained.
Non-MP Appointees will also be allocated to constituencies as godmothers and godfathers to ensure they operate within the constituencies, with a Welfare Office dedicated to accumulating data and addressing the needs of party folk, he added.
“With these and some other measures, we will have a stronger and more united party than before.”
Dr. Bawumia urged delegates to ignore the “lies and propaganda” spread by his opponents within and outside the party, saying the NPP is uniquely poised to break the mythical ‘8’ with him as a candidate, and that electing him as flagbearer would be the best decision the party could make at this time in its history.
“Of the four of us running for flagbearer, I have the best track record of winning elections, having won two in a row. I am the one with administration experience, having served as vice president for two periods. I am the only one who can bring all of the party’s factions together. I am the only one who can promote peace and togetherness among the country’s two major religions.
“To top it all off, I am the one the NDC most fears, and for good reason. They know they won’t have a campaign message with me as the candidate,” he stated to deafening cheers.
Dr. Bawumia urged for unity both before and after the 4 November election, pointing out that this was only an internal contest, with the true ‘enemy’ waiting for combat outside.
“I want us all to keep in mind that this is just a family contest to choose our leader for the main battle in December 2024. So, after this Saturday, I urge us all to band together, close ranks, forgive one another, and prepare to achieve what many feel is impossible but which I, trusting in the Almighty, know is achievable. We’ll break the eight together.”
He commended his campaign staff, led by Fred Oware, other party stalwarts who accompanied him on the nationwide journey, and everyone who contributed in various ways to the campaign’s success.
