The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Awutu Senya East has criticised the Ghana media Association’s recommendation to media to refrain from reporting activities involving the constituency’s Member of Parliament (MP), Mavis Hawa Koomson.
The journalist Ohene Kwame David of Cape FM was reportedly assaulted during the parliamentary procedure.
Following the event, he reported that his assailants were wearing t-shirts featuring the name of Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, whom he had previously questioned on UTV.
David further indicated that his assailants could have confused him for his brother, who works at UTV.
In response to these charges, the MP denied any participation from her campaign and demanded a full inquiry.
Despite this, the GJA issued an order on Thursday, January 25, 2024, asking journalists to refrain from covering the Awutu Senya East MP.
The Awutu Senya East NPP leadership has deemed this direction unfair.
At a news conference, Michael Addy, NPP’s Awutu Senya East Constituency Secretary, expressed displeasure that the MP’s office had not received any additional information on the probe since the GJA first contacted the MP.
He also took issue with the GJA president’s statement, which claimed that the MP associated with those who perpetrate violent actions, even in their homes and mosques.
Mr. Addy sought a retraction of the remark and an apology to the MP.
The party has requested the GJA to undertake a thorough inquiry before reaching any judgements.
The NPP claims to have undertaken its own internal inquiry within the MP’s camp and discovered that none of the MP’s team members were engaged in the incident.
