Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, is serving as Speaker of Parliament on Friday 16th February.
This followed the absence of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and his two deputies.
The Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, read out Order 12 of the House, which requested that Members of Parliament choose someone to serve as chairperson for the day.
Following the request, Frank Annoh Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, nominated the MP for Sunyani East, a four-term member of Parliament. Governs Kwame Agbodza, the minority Caucus’ available leader, seconded his candidature.
The Clerk of Parliament then invited Akwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh to occupy the Speaker’s place and preside over the House.
This is considered to be a historic occasion in Ghana’s Parliament, since it is the first time such an event has occurred since the days of the late former speaker, Peter Ala Adjetey.
