The Minority in Parliament has accused Dr. Ayew Afriyie, head of the Health Committee, of purposefully impeding a parliamentary investigation of the government’s COVID-19 spending.
Parliament’s Speaker, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Finance and Health Committees to investigate the use of COVID-19 monies as soon as possible.
This decision was issued in reaction to apparent anomalies in the processing of COVID-19 funding, as reported by the finance minister on Wednesday, June 22, 2022
On Wednesday, February 21, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson raised concerns on the Parliament floor, accusing the MP for Effiduase/Asokore of sabotaging the probe.
“The head of the joint committee, Ayew Afriyie, has not scheduled a meeting to discuss the topic. The ranking member cannot, of course, convene a meeting; only the chairman has the authority. So, we suspect some type of sabotage.
“There was a sub-committee that the joint committee formed and developed a guideline, and submitted it to the joint committee, which it accepted and as we speak, this matter has been delayed for almost eight months, and we cannot continue like this.”
