The BBC has issued an apology to viewers after sex noises were heard during its live coverage of the FA Cup on Tuesday (17 January).
While Gary Lineker was presenting the third-round replay between the Wolves and Liverpool, there was a lot of moaning.
After the persistent noise began, a perplexed Lineker began chuckling, telling viewers, “I don’t know who is making that noise,” before continuing his coverage.
He later shared a photo of an old mobile to his Twitter account, telling fans,
“Well, we found this taped to the back of the set. As sabotage goes it was quite amusing”.
The BBC Press Office then issued an apology to viewers. “We sincerely apologize to any viewers who were offended during the live coverage of the football game this evening,” the statement says.
“We are investigating how it happened.”
Twitter users reacted positively to the situation, with some praising Lineker for how he handled the surprise on air.
Later that night, on BBC Two’s Newsnight, Lineker said that he initially thought a video had been sent to one of the pundits’ phones.
He claimed that when he realized the sound was “too loud” to be coming from a phone, he realized it was a prank.
“If you told me this morning that tonight I’d be on Newsnight talking about a porn scandal l would have been terrified,” Lineker said.
“As pranks go, it was a good one.”
