The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Henry Quartey, has provided explanations for his utter silence.
Henry Quartey, who has served as the regional minister for Ghana’s capital city since 2021, launched the “Let’s Make Accra Work” campaign in an effort to bring order and sanity to the area.
Through this campaign, Mr. Quartey has demolished a number of buildings at unauthorised locations and waterways, among other things. He has also rid some major streets of hawkers. He also sued people who had constructed on Ramsar sites.
He also launched the initiative Clean Your Frontage to compel Accra residents to maintain a clean environment.
Additionally, Mr. Quartey was successful in moving onion vendors from Agbogbloshie to the Adjen Kotoku Market in the Ga West Municipality.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, meanwhile, has been relatively quiet over the past few months, and there are widespread rumors that he has given up on the “Let’s Make Accra Work” campaign as a result of the fierce opposition he faced from those who are affected.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister said he was recharging his battery and would come back strong in his first interview since his purported self-imposed exile.
“Maybe I haven’t put much petrol in the car, this is 2023, some people said I have resigned, others also said I am slow, or I have gone to bed, but I am a battery, and I am charging,” he said.
When speaking at the 8th Investiture Ceremony of the Advertising Association of Ghana over the weekend, the Minister made this clear.
Mr. Quartey took the opportunity to call for a concerted effort to expedite the passage of the advertising bill in order to reduce the indiscriminate installation of billboards.
“Billboards are properly done when you go outside of this jurisdiction; it’s a system; we have to walk the talk.”
“The problem is that I need a billboard because I have to campaign and my brother [Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah] also needs a billboard, so we are not able to tell the Goro people to back off. Very soon I am going to strike about this indiscipline about billboards, mark my words; we will do the job,” Mr. Quartey added.
