Students at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute have begun paying a GH430 extra after a five-member commission investigating recent disruptions at the institution recommended a surcharge.
Before being readmitted to the institution, each of the over a thousand students is expected to pay the fee.
The school has reopened after a temporary closure was ordered by the Ashanti Regional Security Council after students went on a rampage and destroyed public and private property.
The funds will be used to repair property damage caused by student protests in 2022, which were in response to their displeasure with their predecessors’ final exams.
“Some parents are protesting the amount the students are being levied,” The Parent Teacher Association Chairman of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute, Kwasikuma Mawunyo Cudjoe said.
The Asokore Mampong District Court is currently hearing the cases of 43 students, including juveniles, who were arrested during the rampage.
Kwabena Gyamfi, counsel for the accused, asked the court on Tuesday to vacate an order requiring his clients to go to the police station once a week.
He is also requesting that the prosecution drop the charges against his clients because the student body has been surcharged.
