National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer hopeful John Dramani Mahama has pledged to restore Akufo-Addo’s disastrous Free SHS policy and the National Health Insurance Scheme if re-elected as President in 2024.
He argues that evaluating the two policies will help Ghanaians and improve the policies.
According to Mr. Mahama, the difficulties involved with the implementation of the Free SHS have had a negative impact on the quality of education in various senior high schools, necessitating a reassessment of the policy.

Speaking at a campaign tour in Kongo in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, John Mahama reassured to end the challenges of the free SHS and the NHIS.
“Free SHS is not functioning effectively; the benefit that it is supposed to provide to parents is not being provided. I can tell you right now that the money we spend on our children’s education is significantly greater than when we paid school fees.”
“We are going to repair and improve the free SHS and create a situation where when school reopens, all the children will go together and when they vacate, they will all come home together.”
The former President renewed his call for the Health Minister to resign in light of the NHIS’s demise.
“The NHIL is completely destroyed; the Minister himself stated that the NHIL card provides no benefit and that when he goes to the hospital, he pays cash, which is why I said he should resign…and so the NDC is coming to make it better.”
