Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flagbearer candidate of the New Patriotic Party, is set to submit his nomination forms today, June 16, 2023.
Top party officials, including former Vice Chairman of the NPP, Fred Oware, and former National Organiser, Sammy Awuku, picked up the forms on Dr. Bawumia’s behalf last month.
Alan Kyerematen, one of his competitors, submitted his paperwork on Monday.
Dr. Bawumia said on his Facebook page, ”Dear Friends, God willing… Friday, 16 June, I shall file my nomination forms and contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom) Presidential Primary. It is possible.”
Dr. Bawumia has spent the last few months conducting thorough consultations on his desire to run for the party’s flagbearership.
Vice President Bawumia met with members of Parliament’s Majority Caucus, the Party’s Council of Elders, and traditional and religious leaders to proclaim his ambition to lead the NPP after President Akufo-Addo’s mandate ends in 2025.
The NPP’s leadership started nominations for its Presidential Primaries on May 26, 2023, and will end them on June 24, 2023.
So far, ten presidential candidates have signed up to run for the NPP’s flagbearer position.
They include Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Joe Ghartey, the Member of Parliament for Essikadu-Ketan and former Minister of Railway Development, and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong, the former General-Secretary of the Party.
The NPP leadership proposes to hold a Special Delegates Congress on August 26, 2023, to pick five presidential candidates.
The top five candidates will then compete on December 4, 2023, for the position of flagbearer and subsequently lead the party in the 2024 general elections.
