Former Minority Chief Whip Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has asked the leadership of both parties in Parliament to reach an agreement so that business may be conducted in the House.
Parliament was compelled to adjourn sittings on Thursday, July 20, 2023, due to concerns voiced by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, regarding a lack of the needed numbers to take decisions in the House.
This comes after Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi, expressed worry over the lack of quorum on Wednesday, prompting the adjournment of sittings.
Speaking on the House floor, former Minority Chief Whip Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka stated that the House leadership must take action to solve the issue.
“I urge the two leaders to be mindful of the type of business that we want to conduct and to therefore try to speak to each other and reach an understanding. Your suggestion is the best way to manage this situation, where we can continue to conduct business without making decisions,” he added.
Concerns have been raised about the apparent standstill in parliamentary activities following the daily trial of MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, and the Minority’s consequent boycott of Parliament on days Mr. Quayson goes to court.
While the Majority MPs accused their Minority colleagues of bringing parliamentary work to a halt with their actions, the NDC lawmakers denied the accusation and instead accused the NPP MPs of accompanying flagbearer hopefuls to campaign, so interfering with chamber duties.
