The Office of the Special Prosecutor has arrested Cecilia Dapaah, the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, on suspicion of corruption.
In a statement, the Special Prosecutor disclosed that “At 11:55 GMT on 24 July 2023, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned from the position of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources on 22 July 2023, was placed under arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in respect of suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding large amounts of money and other valuable items reportedly stolen from her residence.
“Ms. Dapaah is being questioned by authorised Officers of the OSP.”
Her arrest comes after the Special Prosecutor’s office was besieged with information seeking a swift inquiry into a large quantity of money taken from the former Minister’s properties.
According to reliable sources, over 200 reports have been received by notable persons expressing worries about the source of the stolen cash, which was reportedly taken by the former Minister’s two home helpers.
Madam Cecilia Dapaah on Saturday, July 22, 2023, announced her resignation. Her resignation came when it was revealed that her housekeepers had reportedly taken large sums of both international and local currency from her Accra apartment.
The act sent shockwaves throughout the country, as many were stunned by the daring crime.
At the moment, two housekeepers, Patience Botwe, 18, and Sarah Agyei, 30, are facing charges in an Accra Circuit Court for their role in the heist.
They are accused of stealing $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from Madam Dapaah’s mansion in Abelemkpe, Accra, between July and October 2022.
