The inability of the government to settle outstanding arrears owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has prompted the producers to call an emergency meeting.
The debt owed to IPPs has risen from US$2 billion to almost US$2.3 billion.
The meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, July 27, 2023, attempts to resolve the persistent issue of non-payment.
Following what they saw to be fruitful negotiations with the Electricity Company of Ghana, the IPPs opted against shutting down their power facilities that serve the national grid.
Despite guarantees and the continuance of electricity production in July beyond the June 30 deadline, it appears that the commitments made during the engagements have been violated, much to the dismay of the IPPs.
The forthcoming emergency meeting will concentrate on developing a strategy to address the government’s debt and avert possible power problems.
However, the IPPs have remained tight-lipped about their individual situations, promising to disclose more information following the meeting on Thursday.
More information is expected to be published as the situation evolves and conversations continue, revealing insight into the issues encountered by IPPs and the possible repercussions for Ghana’s electricity supply.
