On the invitation of South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo departed Ghana on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The summit which runs from August 22 to August 24 will be attended by the leaders of Brazil, India, China, and South Africa.
Although Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the Summit, the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
BRICS is a grouping of the international economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa formed by the 2010 addition of South Africa to the predecessor BRIC.
While the BRICS Summit is primarily a gathering of Heads of State and Government, there is also a robust business agenda planned around the Summit, culminating in the BRICS Business Forum.
At the conference, President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to make a remark. He was joined by Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, as well as officials from the presidency and the Foreign Ministry.
The President will return to Ghana on Friday, August 25, 2023, and in his absence, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will serve in his place in line with Article 60(8) of the Constitution.
