Residents and drivers in the Amansie West District, Ashanti Region have threatened the government to boycott any political party from holding campaigns there unless the area’s terrible roads are rectified.
Residents and users of the roads in the Amansie areas, including Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District, Jacobu in the Amansie Central District, and Manso Adubia in the Amansie South Municipality, joined members of several driver unions in protesting the deteriorating condition of the roads on Tuesday.
According to some road users who spoke to the media, despite government promises to rebuild these roads, little has been done to address the issues. Others said that thieves were attacking them because of the inadequate road system.
The demonstrators brandished signs outlining their grievances and burned tyres off lorries.
When the District Chief Executive was unavailable, they later petitioned the Amansie West District Assembly. However, the petition was accepted on his behalf.
One driver complained that the roads were in poor condition and added, “We driver union members are appealing to the government to fix the roads. If we don’t see any construction on the road, we will not entertain any political activities in the area, and we are very determined to carry out that plan. This caution goes for both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party.”
