According to information obtained by OilCity Radio, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture, will present his letter of resignation to the President later today, Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
The reasons for his resignation are unknown at this time, but sources have said that the Minister wants to concentrate on his presidential campaign before the 2024 elections.
Later today, the Minister is anticipated to deliver his resignation letter to President Akufo-Addo in person.
His decision comes just days after Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen resigned to pursue presidential ambitions.
Owusu Afriyie-Akoto has been a member of the Ashanti Regional Parliament since 2008, representing the Kwadaso Constituency in Kumasi.
He served in Parliament as Deputy Ranking Member and then as the substantive Ranking Member of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs until 2017, when he was appointed Minister of Food and Agriculture.
In the midst of economic challenges and rising food prices in November 2022, Afriyie-Akoto implemented the contentious Planting for Food and Jobs policy at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to sell cheaper foods to Ghanaians.
