In the maiden National Standardized Test for primary four students, administered by the Ghana Education Service, the Ahafo Region came out on top.
With 96% of primary four students performing below the basic level, 3% achieving the basic level, and 1% achieving proficiency, the Volta Region had the lowest performance rate.
The Western and Western North areas were next, with 96% and 93 % respectively of their pupils falling under the below basic level.
Following were the Eastern, Upper East, and Western areas, with 77, 76, and 72 percent respectively, below the basic level.
In general, pupils performed slightly better in English than in mathematics.
That is, 50% of the pupils were below the basic level in English, while the other 50% were made up of the Basic, Proficient, and Advanced.
The nationwide exam, which was administered in December of last year, will assist the Ministry of Education in gathering information regarding pupils’ performance in English Language and Mathematics.
The results also showed that primary school pupils had significant difficulties in mathematics.
A total of 62% of the pupils were below the basic level, with the remaining 38% being Basic, Proficient, and Advanced.
