President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has donated GHS100,000 to support the construction of the stalled National Cathedral.
The President made this donation despite its strong opposition.
According to him, the Cathedral will serve as a focal point for the entire Christian community to gather and worship in addition to being a place of worship and a representation of Christianity in the nation.
“As I have said before, the National Cathedral will not just be another monument adorning the skyline of Accra, it will be a rallying point for the entire Christian community to come together and worship.
“I am therefore committed to working with the Board of Trustees to ensure the completion of this project to the glory of God”.
The allocation of GH80 thousand for the construction of the National Cathedral was rejected by Parliament in December 2022.
The rejection came after the government decided to reintroduce the allocation in the budget estimates for the Ministries of Roads and Highways and Communication.
The House then approved GH180 million for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, as opposed to the initial allocation of GH260 million for 2023.
The government envisioned the $450 million National Cathedral project in March 2017 as a physical manifestation of national unity, harmony, and spirituality.
The interdenominational cathedral is expected to have a 5,000-person capacity auditorium, chapels, and a baptistery.
