The Ministry of Health has reported that the antiretroviral drugs that had been delayed at the Tema port have been cleared.
It noted that the donated medication had been waiting at the Tema port since July 2023 due to the Ministry’s purported inability to pay import duties.
The Parliamentary Minority had requested the administration to give the requisite tax exemption to ensure the medication’s speedy clearance.
The Health Ministry, on the other hand, denied that the delay was caused by a lack of tax breaks and stated that the drugs will be cleared by October 13.
In a press release issued on Monday, October 16, the Health Ministry stated that the drug was cleared on Friday, October 13 as promised and that distribution to various hospitals across the country had commenced.
“The Ministry of Health is pleased to inform the general public that the antiretroviral medications that were delayed at Tema port were cleared on Friday, October 13, 2023, as the Ministry assured in relation to the rejoinder published on Saturday, October 7, 2023, on the aforementioned subject.”
“The distribution of the medications to all affected facilities has begun in earnest.”
The press statement further stated that the “Ministry is working in close collaboration with the Ghana Supply Commission to ensure seamless clearance of such drugs.”
