Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abuakwa South constituency in the Eastern Region, Hon Samuel Atta Akyea has established the “Abuakwa South Disaster Fund” to encourage well-meaning corporate organizations to donate to the repair of locations impacted by recent flooding in the constituency.
In a statement by the MP yesterday, October 5 2022, he noted that the “recent weeks have seen a terrible and unprecedented incident in our cherished constituency, Abuakwa South.”
“Although flooding and its attendant destruction has historically been a common occurrence in our nation during the raining season, Abuakwa South has stood out as an unmistakable exception.
“In the past week, we have acutely noticed how torrential rain has devastated our constituency, especially in the capital, Kyebi. The damage this rain has caused to vital infrastructure such as the bridge in the Subriso electoral area and some communities throughout the entire constituency is of particular concern” Atta Akyea said in his statement.
Due to the circumstances, he added that it has become imperative to set up the Abuakwa South Disaster Fund and invite people and well-meaning corporate establishment to donate towards the rehabilitation of those seriously affected by the interplay of nature and man-made disasters.
Atta Akyea stated that in collaboration with the Municipal Chief Executive, Akosua Asabea Annoh, they have engaged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) who, “within their limited means, has brought relief supplies to the victims of the water inundation.”
He urged the Municipal Assembly to enforce its planning laws, particularly when issuing building permits. He claims that failure to do so will result in the “impunity of building on waterways.
“The terrible repercussions of floods and its crippling effect on lives, livelihoods, and property, as is currently being experienced,” he added.
At least five individuals have been confirmed killed as a result of last weekend’s flooding in the Eastern Region, according to the National Disaster and Emergency Management Agency.
