The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced an upgrade to the GH1 coin with enhanced security features.
In a statement issued by the BoG, the upgraded GH1 coin will enter circulation on Monday, December 12th, 2022.
According to the Central Bank, the coin is similar to the existing GH1 coin in shape, form, and images, with the Coat of Arms in front and the Scale of Justice in back.
The upgraded coin is bimetallic, with an outer gold layer and an inner silver layer, according to the BoG.
The improved coin has a pronounced rough edge and a latent image that appears in a rectangular form below the Scale of Justice at the back.
“The latent image changes from a radiating star to a One Ghana cedi symbol sandwiched between two stars when tilted,” the statement added.
The Central Bank added that the existing and upgraded GH1 coins will co-circulate until the existing coin is gradually phased out. The Bank encourages the general public to accept and use the coins.
