Former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah’s plea to prevent the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) from continuing to freeze accounts and take cash found from her Abelemkpe house has been postponed until February 1, 2024.
The OSP blocked the former minister’s Prudential Bank and Société Générale bank accounts after large quantities of money were discovered at her residence during a search.
On August 31, 2023, the High Court in Accra ordered the OSP to restore the GH¢2.73 million and $590,000 confiscated from Cecilia Dapaah’s residence within seven days.
In response, the OSP appealed the court’s decision and asked the Human Rights Court to allow the former minister’s assets and cash to be frozen indefinitely.
On October 9, 2023, Cecilia Dapaah applied to accelerate the freezing and seizure case.
The OSP reported on its Facebook page that the case had been delayed until February 1.
“The Human Rights Court sitting in Accra has adjourned to 1 February 2024 the case in which former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, have filed an interlocutory injunction application against the OSP to restrain the Office from continuing to freeze Madam Dapaah’s accounts and seizing cash recovered from their residence.”
Madam Dapaah, the former Sanitation Minister, made headlines in July 2023 when the Chronicle Newspaper reported that her domestic help had been charged with allegedly stealing $1 million, 300,000 euros, several million cedis, and the former minister’s and her husband’s personal effects worth thousands of Ghana cedis and dollars.
Cecilia Dapaah resigned from her post following a public outcry. She was detained by the OSP and eventually released on bail.
On Monday, July 24, 2023, officials from the Office of the Special Prosecutor searched the former Minister of Sanitation’s residence.
The OSP reported finding US$590,000 and GHC2.730,000 in cash at the former minister’s apartment.
