Three cement plants recently shut down by the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) have signed an undertaking committing to adhere to industry standards and desist from making substandard cement, according to Professor Alex Dodoo, Director General of the GSA.
Prof. Dodoo claims that the afflicted businesses – Xin a Safe Cement Ghana Ltd, Kumasi Cement Ghana Ltd, and Uniceme Cement Ghana Ltd – were closed down because they ignored repeated warnings.
“It’s something we’ve been questioning; that letter was issued following repeated instructions, and we felt compelled to act for the sake of our country. Fortunately, this time the corporations have all recognized their mistakes, we have halted their activities and are watching them, and we demand more serious measures.”
The GSA has also announced plans to establish laws to govern the manufacturing and sale of electrical cables and iron rods as part of this quality control campaign.
Professor Dodoo emphasised the GSA’s commitment to upholding national standards and safeguarding customers from subpar products. He warned that firms found breaking the regulations would face severe consequences.
“Before the L. I is laid and passed, we will take action not only against these companies, but also against companies in the cement, electrical cable, and iron rod industries.” We picked these three because they reflect the current regions of greatest danger and concern.
“Our actions should demonstrate that we expect them to produce in accordance with national standards and to meet national needs.” Because, as much as we desire factories, permitting them to provide substandard products would just exacerbate our relationships.”
In addition to enforcing rules, the GSA conducts public education initiatives to promote awareness about the need to use high-quality construction materials.
“We have been distributing leaflets educating Ghanaians for the past three weeks.” You may be guaranteed that more and more steps will be taken to ensure that violating individuals and organisations pay the requisite administrative penalties or fines as required by law.”
On November 13, the Ghana Standards Authority shut down three cement manufacturing enterprises in the Ashanti Region for utilising inferior materials in their manufacture.
Among these are Xin An Safe Cement Ghana Ltd in Ejisu, Kumasi Cement Ghana Ltd in Offinso, and Uniceme Cement Ghana Ltd in Bekwai.
According to the GSA, the action is intended to crack down on poor cement production in the country.
