The government has set the producer price for cocoa at GH800 per 64kg bag.
The new pricing goes into effect on Friday, October 14, 2022, for the crop season 2022-2023.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto made this known during a press conference in Accra, yesterday October 5, 2022.
“The 21% rise in the producer price of cocoa is a testament to Government’s resolve to ensure farmers earn a decent income and make cocoa farming lucrative. Government will continue to implement initiatives to build a robust, resilient and sustainable cocoa industry where cocoa farmers and their communities will thrive”, the Minister said.
Ghana’s farm gate price was last raised in 2022, from GHS515 to GHS660.
That was an unprecedented 28% increase in response to the $400 Living Income Differential on each tonne of cocoa.
To secure a respectable level of living for Ghanaian cocoa farmers after retirement, the government will transition the Cocoa Farmer’s Pension Scheme from the pilot phase to the implementation phase in November 2022.
The Producer Price Review Committee has also authorized the rates and fees for all other supply chain players.
Buyers’ margin, Haulers’ rate, warehousing and internal marketing expenditures, as well as fees for disinfestation, grading and sealing, and scale inspection are all included.
Meanwhile, the government has stated that it will continue to assist cocoa producers through the pest and disease control program (Mass Spraying) and the rehabilitation of sick cocoa fields.
Furthermore, it will benefit cocoa growers by making necessary materials such as fertilizers available for purchase by farmers in order to boost agricultural output.
“The government is dedicated to continue to providing drought-tolerant, early bearing, and high-yielding planting materials,” Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto stated.
