Professor Edward Appiah, Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), has clarified that the content of the published book, does not accurately reflect the approved curriculum.
On Thursday, May 25, NaCCA demanded that the textbook “History of Ghana for Basic Schools – Learners’ Book Four,” published by Excellence Publications, be recalled immediately.
Again, Prof. Appiah revealed that his organisation cannot guarantee for the authors of the controversial textbook that denigrated Christianity.
Parts of the widely circulated textbook falsely claim that Christianity is to blame for poverty and that religion has sparked physical conflicts in Ghana and around the world.
The textbook also claims that religion makes people apathetic towards finding practical solutions to their unfavourable living conditions.
Professor Appiah speaking to Accra- based television clarified that the controversial content was not included in the textbook’s original 2019 publication.
Again, he revealed that his organisation cannot guarantee for the authors of the controversial textbook that denigrated Christianity.
“We cannot vouch for the author’s credibility or authenticity, but our checklist is set up in such a way that if they are not credible, you will be removed.”
Prof. Appiah stated that “publishers will normally contract writers, even university lecturers to write for them, and they are just publishers.” Some people write books and sell them to publishers, and the publishers can be anyone as long as you can establish a publishing company, but our rubric and checklist will indicate who is writing, their level, and everything else.”
