Following the recent increase in water and energy tariffs, the Minority in Parliament has urged the government to cushion Ghanaians from what it describes as “worsening poverty levels.”
“We are of the strongest conviction that Government can and must do something to cushion Ghanaians who are going through unimaginable hardships with ever-worsening poverty levels under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led government.”
On Monday, August 15, 2022, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) issued a tariff rise of 21.55 percent for water and 27.15 percent for electricity. On September 1, 2022, the new prices will go into effect
However, in a statement signed by the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu and Ranking Member for the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor debunked the conclusion that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased the Electricity tariffs by 27% for all consumers.
“A critical look at the tariff structure as announced reveals that all residential consumers who fall between 0-300 kWh bracket have witnessed a price increase from GHp/kWh 65.4161 to GHp/kWh89.0422, representing an increment of almost 34%,” the statement said.
According to the Minority, the collapse of the cedi and the uptick in inflation highlight the need for the government to think about lowering the rate of increments for utility prices.
