The New Patriotic Party (NPP) former Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South and deputy Minister for Defence, Major Derrick Oduro has stated that Hon. Adwoa Safo’s assertion that her removal as the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, will enable her to serve her constituents better is a prevaricate to justify her absence.
“The 1992 constitution states that majority of the Ministers should come from parliament, and that’s how it has been over the years…if you are appointed as the Minister, you are being informed of your tasks and then you will decide to agree or not. It is never compulsory to be a minister alongside an MP.
“…some MPs declined ministerial offers because they know they couldn’t combine both tasks …If Adwoa Safo knew she couldn’t combine both tasks she should have declined her ministerial offer,” he said.
“This is not the first time she’s been an MP…she was a Minister for procurement and the whole four years…you delivered …you didn’t complain…and so if she is now saying that her revocation as a Minister will help her concentrate on her MP duties…she’s lying!” Mr. Oduro fumed.
In an interview on Oman Yi Mu Nsem with the host, Alhassan Bin Jibril Spelele on OilCity Radio, in Kwesimintsim-Takoradi, he stressed that the MP’s absence in Parliament has put the NPP at a disadvantage.
“…whatever decision that is being taken at the House…does not favour the NPP due to the numbers…because NPP is now 136 while NDC is 137…and this make NDC very happy…”
He noted that as presumed by some individuals that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the Dome Kwabenya seat in the upcoming 2024 elections, “there are no statistics that prove that NDC will win the Dome Kwabenya seat …because the constituency has always been the stronghold of the NPP.”
This comes after said her removal as the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, will enable her to serve her constituents better.
In a letter responding to her Ministerial revocation letter dated August 5, 2022, Ms. Safo said: “cognizant of my duties to the 75,000 constituents who elected me, this development to opportune and will afford me more time to concentrate on my parliamentary responsibilities and Constituency engagements well as a consolidate the gains we have made as a government at the constituency level in our quest to break the eight.”
She expressed her gratitude to the President for the opportunity he gave her to serve in his government as a minister.
