Following the brawl yesterday, August 2, at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute, four students have been arrested.
The four male students were detained on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, for rioting and alleged possession of leaked examination papers.
According to a police source, the suspects are being remanded in jail for more inquiries and potential prosecution.
The source did not state when the police will commence prosecution.
At the Bawku Technical Institute, where students also rioted and damaged campus property, no arrests were made.
Students rioted at BOTECH to call for the release of a teacher and a National Service member who had been detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on suspicion of leaking an exam paper, while at BAWKU TECH, students clashed with school officials over their strict policies against cheating on exams.
Following recommendations from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the school administration, the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), which is chaired by Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu, closed both schools.
All final-year students taking the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Examination are to report to school solely to complete their assignments before leaving for home, according to Mr. Yakubu.
On Monday, August 1, 2022, all students exited their respective schools by 4:00 p.m.
It is unclear when the two institutions will summon their students back.
