The Ghana Embassy in Israel has denied reports that several Ghanaians had been caught up in the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Hamas.
This follows reports that some Ghanaians are being held hostage by the conflict.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Embassy noted, “The Embassy’s attention has been drawn to a viral video of Ghanaians purportedly trapped in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.”
“The Embassy wishes to state categorically that the incident did not occur in Gaza nor in Israel.”
As a result, it recommended the public to dismiss the widely circulated video footage and to stay confident that the Ghanaian population in Israel is safe at this time.
Similarly, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has asked the public to avoid the viral film, referring to it as a “misleading video.”
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana (GoG) has condemned Hamas militants’ attacks on Israel.
This is in response to ongoing events in Israel, in which Hamas militants from Gaza slipped into southern Israel and attacked innocent Israeli residents under a barrage of rocket fire from Gaza.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, “Ghana unequivocally condemns the attacks and calls on the Hamas leadership to immediately cease the attacks and withdraw its militants from southern Israel.”
“While Ghana affirms its support for Israel’s right to exist and defend itself, it calls on the Israeli government to exercise restraint in its response to Hamas attacks.”
It used the occasion to urge both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict to return to the negotiating table.
