The operator of the national integrated transmission system (NITS), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has blamed the power outages in various parts of the country on a lack of gas supplies to Tema.
“There will be a supply gap of 550MW at peak time,” GRIDCo stated in a statement on Thursday. This will affect power supply to consumers in some parts of the country. The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” said the statement.
Ghana experienced a massive power outage in early September as a result of “a system disturbance,” according to GRIDCo.
Ghana’s energy output had shifted from 84% hydro to 14% thermal to 38% hydro to 60% thermal, resulting in high prices due to gas price volatility and inconsistent gas supply.
The West African country currently lacks a nuclear power plant (NPP), but has picked a location for one as part of its efforts to become a climate-resilient and zero-carbon energy producer. The NPP project is anticipated to cost $581 billion USD.
