In a statement signed by the Acting Chief Director for the Minister for Education, Divine Ayidzoe, the Regional and District Directors of Education are to “hand over all office properties and documents to the most Senior Director in line with the Ghana Education Service rules and regulations.”
The statement further requested that the retired directors are to give feedback on the handling over notes for the attention of the Minister.
“Kindly convey our sincerest appreciation of the dedicated service rendered to the Ghana Education Service and the country of Ghana by the affected Regional and District Directors of Education, wishing them the best in their deserved compulsory retirement,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance, in a statement signed by the deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Abena-Osei Asare, has stated that the government has suspended the granting of approval for post-retirement contract appointment.
“Paragraph 324 of the 2022 Budget statement and Economic Policy states ‘Government has, with immediate effects, suspended the granting of approval for Post-Retirement Contract Appointments, except in cases where the skills of the retiring officer are in short supply and unavoidably needed.”
Prior to this development, four teacher unions; Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Coalition of concerned teachers (CCT-GH), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), in a statement appealed to Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Anthony Boateng to decline the one-year extension of service from the President and the Ministry of Education.
Speaking on OilCity Radio’s morning show, the Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Mr. Jacob Anaba noted that Mr. Boateng should be placed on a consultation position instead of a one-year extension of the office.
However, the Education Ministry has defended its decision for the contract extension. According to the service, Mr. Boateng’s expertise is needed to improve the education sector.
