There is a tense atmosphere inside the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashanti Regional Office amid strong police deployment as candidates for the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 election in the Asawase seat take their turn in the current vetting process.
Muntaka Mubarak, the current Member of Parliament for Asawase, and his contender, Masawudu Mubarick, have passed the vetting procedure and have been assigned numbers on the yet-to-be-printed ballot for the primary.
Supporters of both candidates flocked to the vetting centre, chanting, in a contest that has sparked widespread interest in the region.
The incumbent, Muntaka Mubarak, informed reporters that the support he had gotten from party members during and after the vetting was proof that they approved of his continued service as the area’s MP.
“You don’t get people to continue to support you after two decades of being a Member of Parliament and for people to continue to support me after two decades, then it means there is something that I am doing right, and I only thank Allah for all that he has done for me and I know Allah is not yet done with me.”
Supporters of Masawudu Mubarick also chanted “we need change” when they entered the premises.
In the Asawase Constituency, Masawudu Mubarick asserts that he is the ideal candidate to bring about the change that party members are longing for.
