Kenya’s electoral commission has stated that the names of nearly 250,000 deceased voters have been discovered on the voter roll during an ongoing audit.
Nearly 500,000 more voters were discovered to have duplicate records, and over 226,000 people were registered using documents that did not belong to them.
Others had registered using invalid documents, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in a statement on the irregularities that affect over a million people.
The IEBC’s chairman, Wafula Chebukati, noted that the commission would delay certifying the final register for publication due to the “implementation of the preliminary audit findings.”
The commission had previously stated that it would publish the voter register on or before June 9, but has now moved that date out to June 20, 2022 in order to address the conclusions of KPMG, the hired firm to conduct the audit.
David Mwaure, George Wajackoyah, Raila Odinga, and William Ruto are the four presidential candidates that have been cleared to participate in the election.
In Kenya, electoral irregularities have resulted in fatal violence in previous elections. The elections for this year will take place on August 9th.
