Dr. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, a lecturer at the University of Ghana and unsuccessful National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Shai Osudoku, has been summoned by the Supreme Court to provide justification for why he should not be held in contempt for allegedly disparaging the country’s highest judicial body and calling it “a stupid court.”
In a recent tweet, Dr. Kpessa-Whyte asserted that the Supreme Court is evolving into a “Stupid Court.”
The university lecturer also bemoaned the state of Ghana’s current judiciary in his tweet, accusing it of being partisan and lacking common sense.
The NDC MP James Gyakye Quayson’s name was ordered by Ghana’s Supreme Court to be removed from Parliament’s records due to procedural violations during his nomination and election in 2020, and his tweets were published just 24 hours after that order.
The academic turned politician sent out two tweets three days after his initial one, letting people know that they had been in touch with him regarding the tweet’s alleged connection to the Ghanaian judiciary.
He made it clear that the judiciary in Ghana was not the subject of his tweets.
“Thanks to all who have asked questions about my May 19th, 2023 tweet. For the avoidance of doubt, I follow judicial decisions in many countries and so the said tweet cannot be pinned to Ghana. It has more to do with developments elsewhere including the US. We live in a global village.”
