The Minority in Parliament has called off its scheduled demonstration against Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
This comes after the court deferred deciding on a preliminary objection submitted by the MPs’ attorneys until Friday, September 8, after hearing a police motion to injunct the demonstration due to security concerns.
The MPs, led by the NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, objected to the Police’s ability to initiate the action on their own.
According to him, per Article 88(5) of the 1992 Constitution and the State Proceedings Act, it is only the Attorney General that can institute the instant action.
Meanwhile, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has guaranteed supporters that the demonstration would take place following the court’s judgment.
The demonstration was set to take place on Tuesday, September 5, at the Bank of Ghana headquarters in Accra. The Minority in Parliament accused the BoG of mismanaging the economy and demanded Dr. Addison’s resignation.
The police had stated that the demonstration may lead to a breach of the peace and had petitioned the court for an injunction.
The court’s decision on the preliminary objection is anticipated to determine whether the protest may proceed.
