Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MOMAG) and Momo Agents have voiced dissatisfaction with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) over the application of the E-levy on agent SIM cards, which they claim is causing double taxation for their operations.
MOMAG stated on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, that after working with GRA to resolve their concerns, no beneficial results have been reached.
According to MOMAG, the additional fee, which is in addition to the existing 10% income tax on all transactions, jeopardises their enterprises’ financial survival.
“The current situation is untenable, and if not addressed promptly, we risk losing all our capital due to the heavy burden of double taxation,” the statement read.
The Association is urging the government, notably the Ministry of Finance, and other key parties to act and bring the GRA into compliance.
The statement, issued by the National Secretary, Kingsley J. Amoako-Atta, also noted that the application of the E-levy on Agent SIM cards, as well as the 1% bank levy on all Push and Pull transactions, are putting an unsustainable financial strain on mobile money agents.
MOMAG has threatened to shut down stores and stage protests if its concerns are not addressed immediately.
